Welcome to 2004 fanservice review – capturing all the greatest ecchi moments of the year! I started these highlight posts with 2019, and will slowly work my way backwards!

2004 is a special year for me as it marked the start of my journey into being a full-blown otaku when I started watching Mai Hime fanservice! The same year also had some great ecchi classics, including the loli franchise Nanoha!

Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai

A unique collaboration between studios SHAFT and GAINAX, Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai (This Ugly Yet Beautiful World) was GAINAX’s 20th anniversary work, yet is fairly unknown in the anime community today. That’s probably because it was a fairly standard, forgettable story typical of the era.

Nevertheless, the studios both bought a certain visual flair and a willingness to animate otaku-pandering fanservice, making it a winner in my book!

Premise:

High school student Takeru Takemoto works part time as a (motor)bike courier. During one of his deliveries, he saw a mysterious light passing him and fell into a forest. What he had found was a beautiful girl coming out from a glowing cocoon, calling herself “Hikari.” While Takeru was quite embarrassed because of Hikari’s nudity, a strange monster suddenly showed up and immediately attacked the two. Both Takeru and Hikari demonstrated the power of their other selves before Takeru had a clue of what’s going on.

Bloomers right off the bat!

The entrance scene for any mysterious girlfriend character is always important, and this one is certainly memorable. She floats down from the sky, cast in a warm magical light, start naked and bearing a pair of utterly perfect breasts.

Girls Bravo Season 1

One of the leading out-and-out ecchi TV anime, Girls Bravo certainly set a precedent, a harem anime less focused on the gently love stories of most visual novel adaptations and more on getting the girls naked and teased sexually. With less plot to get in the way it raised the bar for fanservice!

Yukinari Sasaki is an average high school student who is frequently ridiculed by girls to the point that he developed an allergic reaction to them. As a result, he breaks out in hives whenever he comes into contact with a female. One day, when he returns home from school, he is kicked into his bathtub by his neighbor Kirie Kojima, but is transported to Seiren (セーレン, Sēren, “Siren” in the Tokyopop manga translation), a mysterious world with a mostly female population. He befriends Miharu Sena Kanaka, who ends up following him to Earth. Other Seiren girls with various motives soon visit and join the household. They are taken on many adventures as Miharu discovers the wonders of Earth.

In a rare occurrence, it received an uncensored-nipples poster in one of the anime mags!

Childhood friend boob is best boob! Kirie is the plain-but cute character!

MC falls through a bathub for a very naked introduction to the main love interest, the girl from another world, Miharu!

The amount of tits she delivers in her introductory sequence is staggering, especially because they’re well animated with bounce to add to the sexiness!

Cosprayers

A part of the holy trinity of ecchi anime released by Masters of Entertainment (m.o.e) during 2004, Cosprayers is a sexy battle heroine story. It’s complimentary series, Smash Hit and Love Love also tell the behind the scenes production of Cosprayers (meta enough for you yet?).

As with all its shows, Cosprayes is doused in fanservice and is lolicon-friendly, with ecchi covering the fill spectrum! Being a heroine story, there’s opportunity for some spicier service when the girls are captured!

Let’s start with some everyday-life fanservice to get a good look at our leading ladies!

W Wish

W Wish is your run-of-the-mill dating game anime adaptation of the mid 00’s, featuring a moe selection of school-age girls in a light romance story. This one’s fairly obscure, and probably even less known is the fact that it has some tantalising nipple-laden omake!

Onegai☆Twins: Natsu wa Owaranai

Onegai Twins got a summer holiday OVA special in 2004, delivering some tantalising fanservice of the show’s cuties!

Premise of Onegai Twins:

Maiku Kamishiro’s past has always been somewhat of a mystery to him. The only clue he has to who his family might be is an old photograph showing two young children, a boy and a girl, playing in a small pool outside of a blue house. In an attempt to find his family, he moves to this blue house and begins working as a programmer. He’s living a comfortable life until the day two very different girls show up at his door, both in possession of the same photograph, and both claiming to be his twin. With no way to prove who is a relative and who is a stranger, Maiku allows both girls to move in with him until they know for sure.

The promotional art focuses on the slight sex appeal of the main two girls!

Right off the bat we get a statement of intent, the two lead girls showing their cute petite bodies in one pieces!

Smash Hit

Smash Hit, aka Top wo Nerae is one of those classic ecchi anime from illustrious producers Masters of Entertainment (M.O.E). Along with Cosprayers and Love Love, it’s an alternate setting of the same basic story:

A film production company works on a new ‘hero’ movie, starring a group of sexy heroines. Cosprayers is the final product, Love Love follows the main cast behind the scenes, and this series follows the production crew – in particular the cute and childish producer Mitsuki Ikuta.

These three series were a shining beacon of fanservice excellence in 2004, and this one on particular has an edge in its cute female lead and her loli-ish appeal. Her petite figure and habit of wearing childish underwear makes her great lolicon bait!

Her she is, barely covering her flat chest!

The shoe also features the legendary trope of a young boy with a mission for flip skirts!

Mitsuki interacts with the main cast of the production as well, who help bring out her sex appeal!

Kannazuki no Miko

Kannazuki no Miko is one of the best known yuri anime out there, with the ‘advanced’ friendship between the two beautiful young girls being one of the main selling points of the show. There was also some mecha and plot and stuff, but I’ll focus on the important stuff for this blog!

The promotional visuals showed off the intimacy of the two high-school girl leads!

Right off the bat, the show isn’t afraid to show off the cuteness of main girl, with a lovely clumsy panty-shot!

Lime-Colored War Tales OVA

One of those run-of-the-mill harem-comedy anime of the early 00’s that was pretty much forgotten about is Lime-Colored War Tales. It actually got a two-part OVA series in 2004 which was a pretty entertaining romp with some good fanservice!

Set on a tropical getaway, it provides endless opportunities for sexy swimsuits and loose nightware! It was also reasonably good for panty-shots – I might need to check out the TV series soon!

Re Cutie Honey

Cutie Honey is one of the oldest anime franchises out there, and often recognised as a progenitor of fanservice, featuring a sexy young girl as a magical girl, it’s known for lewd gags and sexy henshin sequences.

It’s been reimagined several times over the years, and one of the more recent ones was in 2004, as a 3-episode OVA by studio GAINAX. It was heavily driven by the style of Hiroyuki Imaishi, now known as the lead of Studio Trigger.

Despite being highly stylised, it does not skimp on the skimpiness, taking many opportunities to feature it’s leading babe in various degrees of undress, including plenty of good nipple shots.

Premise:

A mysterious organization known as Panther Claw make their presence known by terrorizing Tokyo and giving the cops a run for their money. Police are further baffled by the appearance of a lone cosplaying vigilante who thwarts all of Panther Claw’s evil schemes before disappearing. That cosplayer is Honey Kisaragi, the result of the late Professor Kisaragi’s prize experiment. A master of disguise, Honey can instantly alter her physical appearance and outfits. But with a push of the heart-shaped button on her choker an (Airborne Element Fixing Device), she transforms herself into Cutie Honey, the scantily clad, sword-wielding warrior of love and justice.

Starting off with a bang, there’s an attack on the public baths!

Honey to the rescue, immediately getting a sexualised transformation sequences. Her boobs are the perfect size and with really will-drawn nipples.
