Gu-Gu Ganmo is a 1984 anime adaptation of a shounen manga published in Weekly Sounen Sunday. Fairly typical of the 80s, it’s a light-hearted gag comedy, featuring many elements from silly antics, to young love interests and even a little bit of fanservice! Admittedly, the fanservice is very innocent, used for laughs rather than played up for sexiness. On the plus side, it’s surprisingly liberal with nudity for a shounen series!
One other big plus for this show is that the designs and animation quality were really great – the girls are super sweet!
The series follows in the footsteps of manga such as Doraemon and Obake no Q-Taro in that the alien Ganmo (who resembles a chicken wearing sneakers) sets out to help his adopted human friend Hanpeita. The series follows the antics of the duo as they find themselves in the middle of much comedic mischief.
The first fanservice comes from the teacher, who kept ending up with he pants pulled down, to reveal the white goodness beneath!
On closer inspection she’s actually wearing panties with a print of a koala on them, how embarassing!
The boys walk in on the girls getting changed – giving us a surprise topless loli!
The bathhouse episode is pretty well remembered by Japanese ecchi fans with its free approach to nudity of the younger characters!
